Arthritis

What is arthritis?

Arthritis refers to diseases that cause pain, swelling and limited movement in joints and connective tissue.

The two most common types of arthritis are:

  • Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is particularly prevalent in older age, with nearly 70% of adults over 65 showing evidence of osteoarthritis on x-rays. The incidence of osteoarthritis is increasing every year as a result of an aging world population. It affects joints in general and weight-bearing joints in particular, such as the knees, hips, and ankles. Alternating periods of relapse and remission usually mark the source of the disease. Inflammation is not usually significant. The precise cause is not known but risk factors include age, genetic predisposition, trauma, and obesity. Women have a greater risk of developing the disease, particularly during menopause.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis is a multisystem autoimmune disease, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body tissues. This causes chronic inflammation in many body tissues including the lungs, heart, eyes, nerves, kidneys, and liver. It most notably produces swelling and distortion of the joints and surrounding tissues. Sufferers may spend long periods without symptoms before relapses, known as flares.
